Hi Beth, I tried to leave a comment for you on your Scentsy post but could not. I am not familiar with Scentsy but I do like candles and essential oils in a diffuser. My all time favourite is lavender. I also like citrus scents.

I didn't know about your early experiences with the Amish. I too have seen the show "Breaking Amish". Someone I know told me that all of these young people have had prior experiences in the big wide world so this show isn't their first foray. I was very surprised by all the swearing and drinking but then I think that is very indicative of how young people behave in general when they get away on their own and they aren't living a sequestered life anymore. I imagine the producers also picked young people that wanted to experience the wilder side so they would have a show that would appeal to the lowest common denominator (the masses). Just my thoughts. I hope you are enjoying your Fall.

Between the Amish and that show Toddlers and Tiara's, I now refer to it as "The Lewd Channel".
Seriously? What are we learning from its programming anymore? That worldly decadence and parading oneself around to gain approval.....is the only way to fame any more. Talent? No longer necessary. Decency? No Value. Integrity? well, I think most of them don't even know the meaning of that word. Let alone "character." It saddens me that our entertainment has become watching the destruction of others. I won't watch any of the reality shows. It doesn't entertain me at all.
When I was in university in London, Ontario, there was a Mennonite community in the area. I used to go their exhibits and markets for fresh food. I also have a one-of-a-kind hand made quilt that is simple exquisite. There is true talent!
Thanks for sharing.....your writing just continues to grow, improve and shine! xx

Beth, this is a wonderfully written piece. Thank you for sharing something so personal and touching about your own young adult life. I too have been shocked at the mockery of the show on TLC. Believing as you do, forgiven through the blood of Jesus Christ, I just honestly pray that not many people who are channel surfing land on that show. Religion is given such a bad name. But, I think we both know Jesus hates religion.

I didn't know about your brief time visiting the Mennonites. How interesting.

I've read a lot of fiction set in Amish country. Some Christian, some not, but all very respectful of their beliefs and traditions, and interesting to read.

I stumbled upon that Breaking Amish show a few weeks ago, not knowing what it was, and expected it to be interesting. Instead, I like you, was broken hearted over it. The one thing I found interesting about it was that in the episode I saw (I think it was the first one) they revealed that almost all of the people on the show were adopted. They all talked about feeling different because they knew that their birth parents weren't Amish. It seemed to play a big part in their decision to do the show (and the one girl - not the model girl or the blonde girl, but the Mennonite girl - actually met with a PI to look for her birth parents).

I agree that they all seemed sad. Overwhelmed. Probably manipulated.
And sad. Just very very sad.
